Last week, I posted a Newsela Summary Sheet that tracks students' thinking when reading a Newsela article. The student I tutor and I went through one last night. Previously we had just talked through certain items or found space on spare notebook paper to write down the important words and gist statement. She kept saying that it was "so helpful." I think it was just nice to have all the information in one place that guided us through. Here is her final work:
Once this is filled out and we go on to the questions, we use the information we've collected and synthesized on this summary sheet to help us work through the questions. She is now comfortable using this sheet as a reference when she gets to a questions she's not sure of.
