At this point, the students are feeling more confident reading poetry. They've been given the assurance that they don't have to "get" or like the poems when we first read them - they just have to put forth effort. Luckily, they're already making connections on their own.
When I introduced "The Pasture" I reminded students of "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" because, of course, they're written by the same author. I asked them to pay attention to that connection as we read looking for similarities in the way the poem was written and constructed (rhymes, words, topic, etc.). We followed up with a journal entry where the students listed similiarities and differences and discussed their ideas with partners and the whole group. They're on their way to sophisticated critical analysis!
